I PIRATI, CREDENDO CHE IL PAESE FOSSE STATO GIA’ SECCHEGGIATO, TORNARONO INDIETRO E TAGGIA FU SALVA. PER RICORDARE QUESTO EVENTO, TAGGIA, IL DODICESIMO GIORNO DI FEBBRAIO IN RICORDO DELL’ASTUTO SALVATORE ACCENDE FUOCHI E FALO’NEI SUOI RIONI E NELLE SUOE VIE. IL FUOCO ED I CARATTERISTIOCI FURGAI ILLUMINANO LA LUNGA NOTTE. COSI’ DA SECOLI I TAGGIASCHI RINNOVANO IL RINGRAZIAMENTO AL LORO SANTO.
During Xth century B.C. the invasions of Saracen pirates frightened coasts of western Liguria.
The town of Taggia was constantly under the menace of these pirates who, unshipped on the coast, started to sack houses and churches. One night, before one of these incursions, the habitants of Taggia, following an advise of St. Benedict, decided to light big bon fires in all corners of the city.
Pirates, thinking that the town was already sacked, come back to the ships and Taggia was saved.
Every second Saturday of February, Taggia lights fires and bon fires inside her squares and streets to remember St. Benedict. The fires and the Furgari, the typical handmade fire-crackers, light all night long.
